Adult Swim's Top Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Significant Investment

In mid-December, the network revealed exciting news: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Executive Acclaim

The official statement also included laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He specifically highlighted the fans who embraced the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you showed up for this new show, praised it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.

At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.

“There's this level of irony that we keep returning to,” explained Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

Future Seasons

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to bask in the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
