In the early hours of Saturday, accounts surfaced of significant blasts shaking the Iranian capital, amid statements from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
According to on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were seen billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a strike involving missiles,” one news agency stated, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Recent Developments
This event takes place against a background of severely escalated tensions in the region. Major events leading up to this attack include:
- US Military Buildup: A significant buildup of American warships in the Middle East, including the repositioning of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest discussions between the US and Iranian officials on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with indications of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a senior US official had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and issued warnings regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been presented to Iran to settle the atomic standoff or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. Officials dismissed assertions about weapons development and protest deaths as unfounded.
