Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After New York City Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and is confident the player will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”
It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “However, I can share, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that reassures me, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD issued surveillance images Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was singled out. There were no additional victims were reported.
The attack took place in the early morning on Sunday about halfway between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse just had a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn remarked. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that his outcome looks very positive.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was anticipated to become a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on early August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, a Texas native, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with Arizona in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in the spring.
