Martínez Double Keeps Inter Milan in Pursuit of Frontrunners

Inter striker Lautaro Martínez scored a late double to secure his side a 2-0 win at Pisa, keeping the away side very much engaged in the Italian league title race in spite of a somewhat shaky display.

League Table Overview

Led by manager Cristian Chivu, Inter currently sit in third position in the standings with 27 points total, tied with runner-up Roma and just one point adrift of table-toppers Milan. In contrast, Pisa hold the third bottom spot with 10 points.

Game Summary

Inter arrived in Tuscany aiming to get back on track after enduring a loss to rivals by Milan last weekend, followed by a European loss at Atlético Madrid. However, they were made to battle all the way by newly-promoted Pisa. The hosts generated plenty of chances, but a clinical Inter broke the deadlock in the 69th minute mark when Argentinian Martínez drilled a one-time shot into the roof of the net. The attacker then tapped in from close range seven minutes from time.

The team’s capacity to score even with difficult circumstances was crucial in securing three points.

Additional Continental Matches

In Spain, the Basque side staged a thrilling fightback from 2-0 down to level at home against Villarreal, only to lose to a goal five minutes into added time. Villarreal’s scoring came from Ayoze Pérez just after the half-hour mark and Alberto Moleiro in the 57th minute, but Carlos Soler soon pulled one back and Ander Barrenetxea leveled the score three minutes from time. Yet, Moleiro had the final say deep into added time.

In the late La Liga match, Real Madrid travel to Girona requiring a win to return to the summit above Barcelona, who secured a 3-1 triumph over Alavés on the previous day.

  • Inter remain in tight contention for the Italian crown.
  • Martínez proved his value with a decisive performance.
  • The battle for first goes on with multiple clubs in the mix.
