Outrage Erupts as Former President Trump's Social Media Remarks on Rob Reiner Spurs Sharp Criticism

Figures from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his statements in the wake of the shocking passing of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Social Media Statement

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood home, Trump took to social media to describe the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to self-praise, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Update and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the Reiners' adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and scathing.

This is a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the statements. Goldberg referenced prior rhetoric from Trump about political violence, asking, "Do you have no decency? Can you get any lower?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a sick man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own demise because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from His Own Party

A number of Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and mental health some families face.

Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the circumstances. He openly challenged others in his party to defend the comments.

The Director's Legacy and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a previous interview, he stated Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.

"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a risk that democratic systems collapse around the world."

Despite his strong opposition, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation after the shooting of another political figure.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a element of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had once shared the anecdote of the session, mentioning Trump's demand for "special hairspray" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
