What We Know Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

At least 16 individuals lost their lives and in excess of 40 sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an attack Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

As of the newest reports, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, including one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are yet to be publicly named, but authorities state their ages are from 10 and 87 years of age.

Here are the individuals who are known so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he was the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.

She recounted the events before the attack, stating they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she recalled.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced immense hardship in their childhood. They had subsequently moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French foreign ministry have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This low act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was among those killed during the attack, according to multiple sources citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many are still receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. The injured include two officers who attended the scene.

A wounded man is a bystander who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the actions of those who came to assist. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He described he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
