New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that became a focal point throughout his campaign.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, did not confirm this decision immediately following his electoral win in November.

"This decision came down to the security of my family and the need to directing my complete efforts on implementing the affordability agenda the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and culinary diversity.

"To the people of Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying what is great about New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live there, the community will forever remain within me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his key pledge – a rent freeze – to his circumstances as a tenant.

However his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing despite the fact that he hails from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg argued it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Stately Residence

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings very different than his modest Astoria home.

Featuring butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he insisted in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, which means the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
